R&D firm recycles nursing home
Separation Design Group cut the ribbon on its new building, a former nursing home in Greene County, Pa.
The Waynesburg, Pa.-based high tech research and product development firm said it recycled the former Curry Home, a 121-bed facility which closed in 1992.
Separation Design agreed to pay $190,000, plus interest, over five years to lease the 57,000-square foot building, and at the end of that term, SDGroup will have the option to buy the building for a dollar.
The company said it completed an upgrade of one floor of one wing of the building, installing a security system and a new boiler, replacing floor and ceiling tiles, and painting all the walls.
It did not disclose the cost of the renovations, but had said previously it expected to spend more than $100,000 on repairs.
"Our business is all about energy efficiency and responsible use of resources" said Doug Galbraith, SDGroup general manager. "We were very pleased to find that the existing building was still in pretty good shape, including the plumbing and heating systems. It took a lot of work on the part of everyone here at SDGroup, but it is definitely worth it. We have already begun rehabilitating the second floor."
SDGroup's current work, in conjunction with Waynesburg College, includes the development of a lightweight portable medical oxygen concentrator, funded in part by the National Institutes of Health
